New Delhi :   Garuda Prakashan proudly celebrated the launch of the captivating book, “A Hindu In Oxford,” authored by the resilient Rashmi Samant, at a prestigious event held at Constitution Club, New Delhi, on October 4th, 2023. The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Smriti Zubin Irani, Union Cabinet Minister, Government of India, as the Chief Guest, and  Sunil Ambekar, Akhil Bhartiya Rashtriya Prachar Pramukh, RSS, as the Guest of Honor.

“A Hindu In Oxford” is a remarkable narrative that takes readers on a journey through the life of Rashmi Samant, a Hindu girl from Udupi, who defied all odds to become the President of the Oxford University Students Union. Her story is one of resilience, decolonization, and triumph over racism and discrimination.

The book launch event was an evening filled with inspiration and profound insights. Smriti Zubin Irani, in her address, commended Rashmi Samant for her remarkable achievements and for breaking barriers. She emphasized the importance of diversity and inclusivity in education and society. She said, “If a teacher engages in a conflict with their student and promotes hatred against their religion within an Indian campus, then we, regardless of our political backgrounds and setting aside social conflicts, should unite to protect that student. This stands as my belief as an Indian.

Upon assuming the role of Minister of Education for the country, I faced a question regarding the role of Hindi speakers in corridors dominated by those with degrees from Oxford and Cambridge, or those from tribal communities in rural areas. Explaining this took some time.

There are individuals who, despite their dedication and devotion to their motherland surpassing their work, couldn’t rise to the position of an Assistant Professor despite their studies. A book should shed light on such people too.

I urge for the publication to consider creating a book about those who were ruined, unjustly labeled for their loyalty, individuals whose stories remain untold, those who have yet to pick up a pen and have been buried. Their narratives deserve to be published someday.”

Sunil Ambekar shared his thoughts on the significance of Rashmi Samant’s story in the context of the educational landscape in India and abroad. He praised her courage and determination in the face of adversity. He said, “The book’s narrative of struggle is both captivating and inspiring, sure to resonate with a wide audience. The title underscores the book’s uniqueness, emphasizing the pivotal role of Hindus in Oxford, especially during British rule. This book holds particular value, shedding light on critical struggles related to India and Hinduism, making it relevant for Bhartiya students studying in Britain.”

On behalf of Garuda Prakashan, Shri Ankur Pathak, Co-founder, and COO of the publishing house, expressed his gratitude to the audience and highlighted the importance of publishing narratives that bring forth the voices of individuals who have faced discrimination and adversity. He stated, “Rashmi Samant’s journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, and her story serves as an inspiration for us all.”

“A Hindu In Oxford” provides readers with a firsthand account of the challenges and discrimination faced by Rashmi Samant during her time at Oxford University. It is a gripping and well-narrated story that sheds light on the harsh realities of prejudice and the resilience required to overcome it. The book promises to be a thought-provoking read for individuals seeking to understand and address issues of discrimination.

Garuda Prakashan is proud to publish this extraordinary book and looks forward to its impact on readers worldwide.
